Cedar Post Elk Ranch is located in the south western corner of South Dakota. It nestles among the rolling hills and open plains of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Just a few miles north of us, is the beautiful mysterious Badlands, which is an ever changing landscape that visitors are continually mesmerized by.
The Cedar Post Elk Ranch is a unique elk ranch ran by Melvin Ferguson and his family, who are enrolled members of the Oglala Sioux Indian tribe. For centuries elk and buffalo have been part of the stable diet of the plains Indians, and for centuries the native peoples have known the benefits of its meat. Due to this long association with elk and other wildlife, Native Americans have also been aware of the affects different diets have on the meat, growth and overall health of the animal. With this unique background the Ferguson family also have the added benefit of over 40 years experience in both ranching and farming. Furthermore, the family have over 10 years of Organic Farming experience and most of their life have maintained a cattle ranch, which they have upheld a 'natural' approach to the care and feed practices of the animals.
Unlike some ranches, Cedar Post Elk Ranch provides its elk with large grass and tree filled pastures. This allows the elk to practice their natural instincts in food grazing, as well as running and playing in the tall grasses. No elk on the ranch is run on chemical filled soil pastures; the Ferguson family have lived on this land for generations and have never placed chemicals on the land or in the soil. Our elk live on a diet of natural highly nutritious prairie grasses, which are extremely high in essential proteins, vitamins and minerals, as well as continued supplements and high grade alfalfa diets during the winter seasons. Additionally, our elk are given fresh clean water from underground springs, free of any added chlorine or pollutants.
